Celebrating Kwanzaa 365: How SCJFF Upholds the Seven Principles Year-Round in Our 10th Anniversary

The South Carolina Juneteenth Freedom Fest (SCJFF) is more than just an annual celebration. As we mark our 10th year bringing this vibrant event to Columbia and the wider South Carolina community, we want to highlight how the spirit of Kwanzaa guides our work throughout the year. The seven principles of Kwanzaa—Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith)—are not just ideals for a week in December. They shape how SCJFF supports, educates, and uplifts our community every day.

Umoja (Unity) in Building a Strong Community

Unity is the foundation of SCJFF’s mission. We bring together people from all walks of life in Columbia and across South Carolina to celebrate freedom, history, and culture. Our Juneteenth events are a powerful reminder of the strength found in coming together. But unity goes beyond the festival. Throughout the year, SCJFF members collaborate with local organizations, schools, and businesses to foster a sense of belonging and shared purpose.

For example, our youth programs connect young people with mentors and peers who encourage positive growth and community involvement. These programs create safe spaces where youth can learn about their heritage and build lasting relationships. Unity means standing together not only during Juneteenth but every day.

Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) Through Youth Empowerment

Self-determination is about defining ourselves and shaping our future. SCJFF supports this principle by working closely with youth in Columbia and beyond. Our year-round outreach includes workshops and activities that encourage young people to set goals, develop leadership skills, and take pride in their identity.

We offer programs focused on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and mental health, giving youth tools to navigate challenges and seize opportunities. By fostering self-determination, SCJFF helps build confident individuals who contribute positively to their communities.

Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) in Action

Collective work and responsibility are at the heart of SCJFF’s community efforts. Organizing the Juneteenth Freedom Fest requires teamwork from volunteers, local businesses, and community leaders. This spirit of cooperation extends throughout the year as members participate in neighborhood cleanups, educational events, and support networks.

One example is our financial literacy workshops held during the week of Juneteenth, which teach budgeting, saving, and investing skills. These sessions are open to all and emphasize the importance of shared responsibility in building economic stability for the community.

Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) Supporting Black-Owned Businesses

SCJFF actively promotes cooperative economics by supporting Black-owned businesses in South Carolina. During the festival and throughout the year, we highlight entrepreneurs who contribute to the local economy and culture. Our events provide a platform for these businesses to reach new customers and build lasting relationships.

By encouraging community members to shop locally and support Black-owned enterprises, SCJFF helps circulate wealth within the community. This cooperative approach strengthens economic independence and resilience.

Nia (Purpose) Driving Our Mission

Purpose guides everything SCJFF does. Our mission is to educate, celebrate, and empower the community through cultural events and ongoing programs. The week of Juneteenth is packed with activities that reflect this purpose, including mental health workshops, entrepreneurship panels, and historical presentations.

Each program is designed to inspire participants to connect with their heritage and envision a brighter future. Nia reminds us that our work is meaningful and that every effort contributes to a larger goal of freedom and progress.

Kuumba (Creativity) in Community Programming

Creativity fuels SCJFF’s approach to community engagement. We design programs that are not only educational but also inspiring and fun. From art exhibits to music performances and storytelling sessions, creativity brings culture to life and makes learning accessible.

Our events often feature local artists and performers who share their talents and stories. This creative energy helps build pride and encourages others to express themselves in ways that honor their roots and experiences.

Imani (Faith) in Our Community’s Strength

Faith is the belief in the community’s ability to overcome challenges and thrive. SCJFF embodies this principle by maintaining hope and confidence in the power of collective action. Our members and supporters believe in the value of cultural heritage and the importance of passing it on to future generations.

Faith also means trusting in the process of growth and change. SCJFF’s decade-long journey shows that consistent effort and dedication can create lasting impact. This belief motivates us to continue expanding our programs and reach.

SCJFF’s Impact Beyond the Festival

While the Juneteenth Freedom Fest is a highlight, SCJFF’s work is ongoing. Our community outreach throughout the year includes:

  • Youth programs that build leadership and self-confidence

  • Financial literacy workshops that teach practical money management skills

  • Mental health initiatives that provide resources and support

  • Entrepreneurship training to help local business owners grow

  • Promotion of Black-owned businesses to strengthen the local economy

These efforts reflect the seven principles of Kwanzaa in action, showing that cultural celebration and community development go hand in hand.

Looking Ahead to Our Biggest Year Yet

As SCJFF celebrates its 10th anniversary, we are excited to bring the biggest and most impactful Juneteenth Freedom Fest to Columbia and South Carolina. This milestone reflects years of dedication to community building and cultural education.

We invite everyone to join us—not just during the festival but throughout the year—to experience how Kwanzaa’s principles inspire real change. Together, we can continue to build a stronger, more connected community that honors its past and embraces its future.
